Diving in Thailand > Phuket

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and also its second smallest province. Most dive sites are off nearby islands, but distances are fairly short and there are dozens of dive shops and boats to cater to your needs, mostly based near Chalong Pier. The high season is generally considered to be from November to May. During the summer monsoon season, mornings and afternoons are still sunny and clear, but it tends to rain in the evenings and water clarity goes down. Locals consider May to October the "cool" season, and the weather is quite tolerable, much more so than in the tourism centers around the Gulf coast.

Areas to dive in Phuket

Karon Beach

Karon Beach is on the west coast of Phuket, south of Patong and north of Kata. Unlike the bigger, busier, and noisier Patong Beach further north, Karon offers visitors a nice long quiet stretch of sand, with plenty of beach umbrellas available for rent.

Kata Beach / Kata Noi Beach

Very popular with families, Kata is an all round favourite due to its spectacular palm-lined beach, great restaurants, lively but not raucous nightlife and varied accommodation options - all close to the beach.

Nai Yang

Nai Yang is just a five-minute drive south of the airport and is very popular with Thai locals. Here you'll find what beach life is all about. Fringed with casuarina trees providing picnic areas for locals, it's a shady spot for souvenir and food vendors.

Patong

Patong is the party capital of Phuket, with a sex-drugs-booze-saturated nightlife and a great beach.
